Paddlefish Fun Facts

The paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) is the oldest surviving animal species in North America.

Paddlefish are long-living fish that can survive up to 30 years.
Paddlefish breathe through a technique called “ram ventilation” and are constantly in motion so they can get oxygenated water to their gills.
Paddlefish are filter-feeding planktivores, and cannot be caught by conventional fishing techniques.
Paddlefish use electroreceptors on their rostrums, that is their pointed, paddlelike snouts that help to find prey.
